Formulary Case Report: Diabetic Ulcer

Prior History:
Hospitalized for 9 days w/femur fracture in July ‘06; upon return to Long Term Care (LTC) Facility, heal area was a blister that went from black eschar to open wound. Wound had not significantly changed from readmission to LTC facility between July ’06 and start of AHS Formulary at the end of February ’07.
Recommendation for BKA (below the knee amputation) from orthopedic surgeon in 11/06. Treatment Protocol:
AHS’ Formulary beginning 2/28/07
Standard Care:
Accuzyme, adaptic, coversite, kerlix; minimal response to treatments prior to AHS Formulary.
Patient Outcome:
Wound showed signs of movement to closure after first week of treatment using the AHS Formulary. Significant month over month progress included a 52% reduction in wound size after one month, 92% reduction after two months, and total closure or 100% epithelialization after three months of treatment.
