Types of Wounds

Skin is the body’s largest organ and performs essential functions in protecting the body from a host of serious and potentially life threatening external contacts. But many health conditions or physical incidents can interrupt the skin’s function. When a wound occurs, the body’s mechanisms for healing normally restore that function by closing the wound.

Sometimes, though, the healing process fails, leaving you with greater risk of infection, further deterioration of the skin and surrounding tissue, even reduced mobility.

Wounds are most often classified either by the cause (pressure, surgical, skin tear, burn) or by the underlying health condition predisposing the individual to the wound (arterial, venous, diabetic).

There are many potential causes for the failure of a wound to heal. Poor circulation, obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, age and smoking all can be contributing factors. And there are certainly other factors that are poorly understood.

Regardless of the cause of the wound -- by a burn, surgery, pressure or irritation, damaged veins, or an underlying medical condition – if it does not improve significantly in four weeks or heal completely in eight weeks it is considered a chronic non-healing wound.

Fortunately, whatever the cause or age of a wound, or the underlying factors, Advanced Healing Institute’s TRUHEAL Wound Program has demonstrated and documented healing success.

More details on specific types or stages of wounds are available from the menu.

The good news is that you can take charge of healing your wound, no matter how long it has refused to heal. Contact Advanced Healing Institute now for a free assessment and find out how similar chronic wounds have been successfully treated by the TRUHEAL Wound Program.
